Chlorinated chicken from the USA. .if we get a trade deal.... will certainly be on the quality and health agenda.
There not still trying to flog that old nonsense are they?

Chlorates are regularly found in lots of food stuffs including drinking water.
Fruit and veg often contain levels of chlorates above recommended levels.

In the US the raw chicken carcass is rinsed with hypochlorus a weak acid that forms when tiny amounts of chlorine are dissolved in water to remove harmful bacteria. Europe doesn't follow this process but it is based on sound scientific research and is considered standard practice in the industry.
The New Zealand (the current world darlings) Food Safety Agency concluded that no safety issues were identified.

You need to something to reduce food poisoning and the chlorine treatment reduces the incidence of salmonella from 14% to 2% in America.
EU samples were found to contain between 10-15% salmonella levels.

The banning is purely a protectionist political manoeuvre because the cost of imported US chicken is cheaper than that produced in the EU.

But if you believe in pixies and want to pay more for chicken to increase your chances of catching salmonella then you are free to do so. That's the joy of Brexit, we are free.
