Answer is 80. I think. With the absence of brackets to make it clear, one should do additions/subtractions before multiplications/divisions. Then again it's a long time since I did 'O' level maths!

As written by the OP, following PEMDAS rule, Kedikat is right!
(Second) 40X0=0; thus (first) 40+0+1=41.
As rewritten by Aitchie - 40+40x(0+1)=80, answer is calculated:
(0+1)=1; (second 40X1=40); 40+40=80.
The brackets/parentheses (not in the original post) alter order of calculation.
Have a look here.
PS. - I had to look up Pemdas online to refresh/confirm my memory.....!

40 + 40 = 80
80 x 0 = 0 (80 x 1 = 80)
+ 1 = 1
answer 1
80 x 0 = 0 (80 x 1 = 80)
+ 1 = 1

Re: Maths experts needed
Using BODMAS Brackets over division/multiplication/addition/subtraction the answer would be 41
40x0 =0
40+0 =40
40+1 = 41
40x0 =0
40+0 =40
40+1 = 41

Re: Maths experts needed
When I looked it up earlier, I also remembered it as BODMAS, but didn't find that on first try; PEMDAS came up, which appears to be the US version - they use "Parenthesis, Exponent..." whereas we use "Bracket, Order...." - but still the same result...

Re: Maths experts needed
We also used bodmas at school so I come up with 41. Put it into a spread sheet on Excel and it also comes up with 41 therefore it must be 41.

Thanks everyone,have to admit i've never heard of BODMAS but the it was probably taught to me over 50 years ago(i sometimes forget what i did an hour ago)Without any brackets i started from the left and came up with the answer 1.As for those who came up with 80 the wheel's still turning but i think you need to change the hamster.Thanks again.

Re: Maths experts needed
You do not need to be an expert to work out the answer to this one!
Basic rule in Maths says multiplication/division first, addition/subtraction after.
So all those who say 41 are right - trust me I am a Maths teacher
AND Groucho! The question at this time should be "when will be 1 stg = 3.50 Lira??? (official rate this morning is 1 TL = 3.5439) ,

Re: Maths experts needed
I was rather bad at maths in my school days (I scraped a C at O level in 1976), but even I'd worked out it was 41. Thank you for improving my self esteem bigOz !
