Renewal of TOM at Metehan
I renewed my TOM today and had an interesting discussion with a very friendly guy in the TOM office. He told me that their regulations at present are that no TOMs will be issued after 31 January if the vehicle concerned is TC registered and the owner is British. The TOM he issued to me is for a year but this of course will depend upon whether the GCs are going to let British passport holders over the border after the end of January anyway.

Not surprising that the ROC are going to be a bit picky about former EU citizens not breaching their borders from the north with vehicle access. Am sure that more restrictions will follow.

alphamike, The RoC has always been picky about anything that they think can cause the North a problem, good luck to the leavers, hope they enjoy their party when it happens and get to pay for the damn bell in Big Ben to ring out again!

What has to be shown when getting the TOM our car is owned by my wife who is German but with TC ID
Card with red line but she has no Euro license. Could she get the TOM as she owns it and I present my uk
license. Confusing isn't it you would think they had more important things to worry about than continually
trying to find ways to punish the few Brits that live here.

Those British ex-pats living in the TRNC who elected to vote for Brexit would probably never have considered the impact on crossing the Green Line into the RoC as their priorities were far more important. Getting rid of the EU 'gravy train' costing UK taxpayers a fortune and re-establishing UK rule over UK citizens was, perhaps, more important? I suspect you were a member of the minority 'remainder' camp? However, this has nothing to do with the original post of TOM at Metehan.

Well said Tomsteel..... absolutely nothing to do with the original post, and as you quite rightly say, the leavers had far more reason to vote the way they did, than the minor detail of popping to the South. South in danger of shooting all their toes off....

So I take it that the ROC is going to ignore the transition period. Wasn't the 31st December 2020 the date given?

Wasn't there something a while back last year to say the RoC MIGHT not accept UK driving licences and only accept European Driving Permits.

After the UK leaves the EU you will require a 1949 IDP, available from UK Post Offices, and a UK Driving Licence to legally drive in the RoC.

That's if you can get a TOM - lol. TOM - permission to use your Northern registered car in the RoC without having to pay additional road tax, more or less!! Of course it could be the same as a MOT - you know how the RoC loves doing things backwards - lol.

So I take it we are fine to drive on Uk licence until January 2021Kanonier wrote:After the UK leaves the EU you will require a 1949 IDP, available from UK Post Offices, and a UK Driving Licence to legally drive in the RoC.
This is what's on the Gov web site Cyprus 1949 You do not need an IDP unless the UK leaves the EU without a deal.
I'm leaving now to go find myself....if I arrive before I get back, please ask me to wait!

Agreed, but what are you going to drive? OK if your TRNC registered vehicle already has a TOM but if it runs out - lets say in March - then what will you drive instead?

A TOM is actually a document No TOM89
Permission to use a TRNC registered Car in ROC.
Often called Road Tax or MOT document.
You Cannot purchase insurance without it

If you live in the north you cannot drive an ROC car across the border north to south the last person that did had the car taken from them.

Re: Renewal of TOM at Metehan
It was a GC who lives in the TRNC and the car was taken from him by the TRNC then handed over to the RoC where it was re-sold to the original owner but without a Kocan! OR It is a good rumour and nobody knows for sure. OR The BRS are sorting it all out and will tell their members when they have fixed the problem. OR I wasn't me! lol.
I insured mine in the RoC yesterday and the insurance guy did not know anything about the British owners of TRNC registered cars not being able to get a TOM in the future, he just said yeah and we will wait and see!

Re: Renewal of TOM at Metehan
Went there yesterday with my old t.o.m,which has 4 months to run. Thought I would get a new one so at least I have a year which would be ok to fit in with the transition period.
Did not realize they just gave me exactly the same with the 4 months on. Anyway noticed on the way back . Asked for a year and they asked why as once the 31st Jan passes they wouldn't allow me through with my car anyway.even with the yearly document from the UK post office. They are saying you will be stopped because your car is owned by a non Turkish Cypriot.
Charming..... Awaiting the incoming mayhem

To be honest, with the exception of pork I have no reason to go South. I can live without pork and my Breexit vote would not have been effected one way of another.Brazen wrote:Those British ex-pats living in the TRNC who elected to vote for Brexit would probably never have considered the impact on crossing the Green Line into the RoC as their priorities were far more important. Well....
If it's only the 'expat-owned-cars' that they are stopping, and not expats themselves, I suppose that I will need to transfer my car logbook (Koçan) into the name of my friendly, long-suffering, TC friend

They will lose a lot of revenue in insurance then. Another shot in the foot methinks. Maybe cut backs on staff who are not needed...... that was a bit tongue in cheek.... lol.

I don't think that they give a damn about the revenue as long as they inflict 'alarm and despondency' and damage TRNC's economy by putting people off living here and travelling to here...

Yes Keith but add that into loss of revenue through the airports, loss of revenue from Brits who shop in the south, loss of revenue from Brits who liked to visit and stay in hotels, eat at restaurants etc.... I think maybe the north should stop any Brit owning a GC registered car coming across, same thing really..... the GCs will feel the effects over time. We always loved to go to restaurants in the Troodos, funnily enough there were no GCs there or at least very few.... but, we helped them survive..... no longer unfortunately.

My TOM was due to run out on February 14th 2020. The date is important, but I can’t remember why!
Anyway, I handed in my current TOM which still had three weeks left, the friendly man took it, printed off a new one for twelve months starting today.
Panic over.

There are always many solutions to every situation . If you really want to go south or want things from the south I am sure you can have a laugh at their expense figuring out ways around their petty rules. I personally feel it’s their loss at the end of the day . BRITISH people are resilient and will find ways of getting around this
