Seen at Metehan today, rental car turned back
This might be on interest when the question "Can you take rental cars to the south" is asked.
Today at Metehan, was crossing south myself. All cars plates were looked at so you can't get out and have the white paper stamped in advance of pulling up at the passport kiosk.
Car in front was a rental from the well known firm B*******.
Officer(ess) looked at the plate, asked the driver to repeat the number, then asked the driver asked to produce the cars document / rental agreement.
It was pointed out to him that there was no authorisation note, signed and covered with the rental firms ink stamp allowing the car to be taken out of the TRNC. When he advised the officer that the rental agency has OK'd it for him to go South, she advised him, "Not without a specific letter or annotation on the rental documents".
He was escorted round the police post and sent off back to the North.

Its always been an unwritten law that no rental cars from the north can cross over so no surprise.

I think your find that ANY rental car can cross with written permission from the rental company allowing you to go South , I've done it before & my friend works for a big hire car company over here & it goes go if you ask . I don't think hire company's like doing it as you only get 3 rd party over there but if you get on well with the company you use & ask they should do it . It not against the law , you just need a letter from the hirer.

There is no 'unwritten' law that you cannot take rental cars to the south.
Providing:
a) the rental company allows you, and
b) you have ALL the correct documentation
there is no reason at all to stop you.
There are however, a few companies that do not allow you to take the car to the south but that is their company rental rules.

There are more well known companies beginning with 'B' so it would be best if hirers knew to which one you refer Tony... I can think of Bellapais and Baspinar for a start...elkiton wrote:This might be on interest when the question "Can you take rental cars to the south" is asked.

Any hire company can have insurance arrangements that allow their cars to go south but some choose not to. If the company says it's OK you must make sure you have the stamped authorisation to do so... It's quite simple and correct of the authorities at the crossing to refuse entry without it. As it's not a driver-owned vehicle and they won't be on any of the vehicle's documentation otherwise....

I have taken a hire car to the South, however you must have a letter with all the car details on signed by the owners. On one occasion I had not got the letter and was stopped.Car coned off etc. However a call to the hire company who faxed a letter to the customs post who the allowed me to cross. This was about 2008.and the car company began with an A.

Unfortunately we were turned back at metehan today, despite having all correct paper work from car hire firm.
The problem was that as it's Saturday, we could not get the free road tax, as the office is closed. Without it, we could nt but south side insurance.
Having said that, if it d been a weekday, they were happy to let us bring a hire car in!

Re: Seen at Metehan today, rental car turned back
We rented from Bellapais at Easter 2013.Friends asked us to hire, then we could collect/drop off at LCA.They were aware we were going straight to LCA on the Saturday morning as that's when we collected the car.Someone met us at office at 07-30 in the morning, not until then did they say we couldn't take the car south as the MOT office is closed Saturdays!!No idea why they didn't say when we paid on the Friday. We had all the permission to travel South with car in letter form.Friends were already in flight,so we had to send a taxi + go in ours to make sure they were collected.Too late to message them to say look for their names.£50 down the drain. No trouble taking them back after going to Metehan to get MOT Friday before.

If visitors are arriving in the RoC, why hire in the TRNC? Get the car hire company at the arrival airport to sort the insurance for the north. It can all be done on-line for a small surcharge.

Re: Seen at Metehan today, rental car turned back
Friends have done this with no problem but my fear would be if there was a problem with the car or I had an accident, I would then need to get the car over to the other side.tomsteel wrote:If visitors are arriving in the RoC, why hire in the TRNC? Becker do you mean Bellapais ABBEY rent a car, not Bellapais rent a car? They have always been very efficient and only allow customers South who have dealt with them before and know the procedures.

I think you will find that cars from the south side only have THIRD PARTY cover when they are bought over to the Northern side.
Much better to get a hire car on the Northern side as you have FULLY COMP cover and back up should the car break down etc. . Many hire car companies, such as Ibo Cars Tel: 0533 865 63 05 will collect you from the airport and then supply you with a car when you are on the Northern side. There can be all sorts of complications with a southern hire car on the northern side should you have an accident! Why have the stress?
