On the way to Niciosia driving from GIrne, on the right if I remember back in May stands quite a big outlet opticians.

Can anyone recommend this optician outlet ?

More important is it still there ? So many shops are closing need to make sure it is still open before I make the journey.

There is also a smaller Akay shop in Girne High Street which we always use for our specs. They are excellent there. They don't do the eye tests though, the eye clinic has moved to by the Pia Bella, so you have to go there for the prescription, unless you already have one.

Please ask your fellow friends, neighbours, businesses etc... to register on the Kibkom Business Directory or Personal Telephone Directory, it really is a good tool and growing very very fast.

Kiplet, I think the details can be found here: http://www.kibkom.com/Opticians/listing.html

toi Deniz, yes I had heard that too, but at the moment I am seekikng an optkician where Alan can have his eyes tested cos he needs new specs. He can have them done in U.K and bring a prescription back, but it owuld be good to get them done sooner rather than later. any ideas anyone. (preferably Kyrenia!)

Cyprus Eye Clinic, drive past Magic Touch to cross roads, turn left for about 75yards and its the building on the corner of first road on the right. However, there is a far better person (IMHO) in Lefkosa who treats and has operated on a lot of people you know personally (myself included) who I would recommend more highly. You did say you wanted Girne rather than Lefkosa.

Others in this thread, please don't mistake purveyors of specs as necessarily being Opticians, because sometimes they are not. Canada Optics being one of them, although more often than not their prices for frames and lens are considerably cheaper than Akay Optics.

Thanks Sophie. it is really for Alan to have an eye test and new specs. I would gladly go to Lefkosia if i thought he would get a better deal for that. What do you think. he doesn't need ops etc (I think, and hope), just failing eyesight, so doyou reckon the Cyprus Eye Clinic could be the best bet. If so, I will take a look. and thanks so much.

Now I need to find a hearing aid place after the very sad death of Said bey in Lefkosia.

Sophie would you please add details of Lefkosa optician. I assume from your comments they do normal eye tests as well as surgical treatments etc.

Do they provide prescription lenses and frames or just provide prescription?

Marion, there is a young lady at Near East hospital who does hearing tests, I think her name is Hatice but not sure of her other name, she is very good and professional. She has her own practise at Gonyeli where she provides hearing aids, I'm sure the hospital could give you more information.

Hi cyprusishome. The gentleman in question in Lefkosa is an Optician but also an eye surgeon and has a clinic at the Etic Hospital nearby. It's difficult for me to describe how to get to his consulting rooms, but it's close to the Lefkosa General Hospital but on the opposite side of the main road near the first roundabout He's saved two peoples sight that I know personally by picking up symptoms that others have missed. His name is Op.Dr. Mustafa Guvenir, 0392 223 66 40 Sht Ali Hasip Sok. 19/2 Ortakoy, Lefkosa. He only specialises in eyes, contact lenses and performs lazer treatment and cataract Ops. at the hospital. He speaks perfect english but his receptionists isn't too good. You would have to go to Canada Optics back on the main road for the lenses to be made up and choose your frames. Hope this help. I really do rate this man.

Hearing Aids and Opticians: about six years ago I had my ears tested at Specsavers in London, was told that I needed them and bought bulky aids that sat behind my ear for well over £1000. Recently I had another test done by an NHS consultant and he asked if I wanted new hearing aids after showing me contemporary, unobtrusive and small fit in the ear jobs. He fitted them for me there and then and advised not going to Specsavers. He said even if a person doesn't really need them Specsavers are in the business of selling specs and hearing aids, and they will.
I leave you to draw your own conclusions from this tale ladies and gentlemen.

I also found that the reactalite lenses from my UK prescription didn't stand up to the intense sunlight here. Have used Akay optics in Girne High Street ever since and they have been great.
There used to be a wonderful ophthalmologist at Medikent but she doesn't appear to be there at the Kolon. Anyone any idea where she went please?
Have been seeing Dr Hatice at The Cyprus Eye Clinic near the Pia Bella and she has been pretty good.

I have also been using Akay Optics since I have been here, and have had great service and follow up if any problems, also used and swore by Cyprus Eye Clinic until recently, have decided they book far too many apointments out of greed, had bad experience of phoning to check appointment, and getting asked would I mind coming one hour later, after waiting another hour (2 hours later then appointment time) needed a loo break for 1 min, and they could not wait, complaint went in, sorted out, needed another appointment, and sorry next week when attended waited well over another hour and walked out, will never go back, as I need regular checks for medication, I need to find another optician, looks like Lefkosa best option!

If you find one let us know on here. Its odd many places sell glasses but getting an eye test seems limited to a few places.

The eye doc that we use is Dr Deniz Atakan. He is a really nice guy and very thorough with the eye tests and can't recommend him highly enough. Current price for a test/consultation is 100TL. Dr Deniz has consulting rooms at Celiker Clinic - tel: 0392-8154950. Directions: travelling from Lapta towards Girne, along the bypass, turn left at the traffic lights beyond the GAU roundabout. Follow this (rather winding) road down and you will find Celiker on your right.

For those who have no objection to shopping in the South, there is a very good opticians located in the Ikea Mall, South side.
Having had a couple of experiences in the North which quite frankly were not up to scratch either in testing or quality of lens / frames, I decided to see if shops in the the EU were better regulated and offered a better service.
I have now bought my and Diana's varifocals there for the last couple of years, and can recommend them.
Please note that this is my personal experience, and is not intended to denigrate any recommendations people have made here re opticians they have used in the North.

Just a warning about Cyprus Eye Clinic. I read a few complaints here, so I believe it's not only me who had bad experience with them. First, while the doctor was giving me an eye check (100tl), she found my optical nerve looking weird and said there might be glaucoma developing. I check my eyes almost every year, and I never heard of anything like that. She sent me to get a Doppler test (150 tl) - nothing. Gave me a visual field test (90 tl) - nothing. No glaucoma whatsoever. In Scotland my husband got a full eye check including visual test for 30 pounds only... but whatever. No news is good news in this case, but I still wondered if she just made it up.
The next incident that turned me off completely was when we went in to pick up lenses for my husband, and he complained the astigmatism lens was difficult to put on and uncomfortable to the point that he couldn't wear it for even a few hours. She said that it's a bit thick, so DISCOMFORT IS NORMAL. How's that coming from a doctor? No attempt to check how tight the lens was, no further advice. We left with a feeling they just tried to get rid of us, since we already paid the money and were of no further interest to the doctor...
I believe some people had positive experience with that clinic, otherwise it wouldn't be so full all the time. Or maybe it's just the only clinic around, who knows. With no competition from anyone else there's no need for them to deliver better service or even to adhere to basic medical etiquette. However, they have two less patients now. We will go to a different clinic next time, even if it's in Lefkosa, or South, or even a different country.
