What's going on?

So, I came over last week for 5 days from the UK and my phone would not work. Never had a problem before.

I went into Turkcell shop in Girne and was sold a SIM for 55tl (flex 1, 2 or 3), typed in the *123# as instructed got a message saying not registered press ok.

Still the phone would not work.

Was I sold a lemon by Turkcell?

What's the best option? Buy a cheap Turkish phone?

Any help would be appreciated, if I had an accident or broke down in the hire car what would I have done?

There is some 'process' with new pay as you go sims here that requires you to text in your name and passport / kimlik card number. It might be related to that. I would go back to where you bought it from and not leave until you are able to make a call using the sim.

Thinking about this a bit more in addition to the system mentioned above there is also a 'system' in place that does not allow you to use a given phone not bought in the TRNC with a local sim for more than 90 days in a calendar year (I think), unless you go and pay tax on it. If you have already this year used that phone with local sims, for more than 90 days, this might also be a possible 'explanation' and if it is then you will need a new / different phone or need to register and pay tax on that one, though this seem unlikely given the date and if I am right about it being 90 days in a calendar year and not in a 'rolling year'

Any electronic device bought here must be registered. Anything brought in from abroad must also be registered and duty paid. there seems to be a shortage of pay as you go sims as the companies prefer you to be on contract.

for an extra couple of quid a month on your package you can ring 100 minutes around the world so you can call to sort problems here when you are away Or as we have to do ring Eire where a son has emigrated to and the internet fails there

The Red Entertainment package would be superb if it did what it said it should...

I nearly got caught on this one no cost for calls round the world but excluded Turkey 'I made them change it back call in a shop they usually sort it
What you want is the standard deal that includes Turkey and pay £3 a month for 100 minutes world calling

Did it in February, see http://www.kibkomnorthcyprusforum.com/v ... 31&t=46453
The costs mentioned there do not include the tax charged for your phone, that depends on make and model. I think I paid about £30 tax, they have a folder they consult to determine the charge.
